What is a Board of Trustees?
A governing board elected or appointed to direct the policies of and manage affairs of an educational institution.
Student Affairs Committee
What is the Student Affairs Committee (SAC)?
There are two Student Affairs Committees. One is within the students and the other is within the Board of Trustees. The Student SAC is a group that represents student’s viewpoints to the members of the Trustee SAC. In addition to providing input for student’s opinions of voting matters of the Board, we also advise on matters of campus concern.
Who is a member and when does it meet?
SAC is a permanent committee of the Board of Trustees, thus its members are relatively constant because they serve terms on this committee. However, SAC is a temporary committee for students. The Student SAC is organized only when Trustees will be coming to campus. This is usually only twice a year, once at Homecoming and once in the early spring. The only permanent members of the student SAC are the Senior Representative to the Board of Trustees, the Junior Representative to the Board of Trustees, and the SGA President. Other students will also be included in these meetings. The Dean of Students will also be a constant member of these meetings.
How do topics get picked and how do students become a part of it?
The agenda for these meetings will be advised by the Trustee agenda as a whole and by student concerns on campus at the time. It is the job of the Senior and Junior Representative and the SGA President to assess issues on campus with the input of others in order to form the agenda. It is also at their discretion to select students who will be most appropriate to speak on these agenda items. Usually, there will be around four or five students speaking on each agenda topic. Although we only have meetings involving both the Student and Trustee SAC twice a year, we are also responsible for maintaining contact with Trustee members of the SAC.
What can we do for students?
We can get your opinions heard by the Board of Trustees so that there might be a greater possibility for change on campus. We take all student opinions into consideration when forming our agenda with the Board. So if you have major campus concerns, let us know and we will try to incorporate them into our agenda. Additionally, we select students to come to these meetings with us. So if you are passionate about an issue and would like to speak to Trustees one-on-one, we might be able to get you there. Please keep in mind when bringing us your concerns that the major priority for the Trustees is the long-term future of Wheaton. Therefore, we only talk to them about issues that have a long-lasting importance for Wheaton. This means that any minor issues such as not liking the food in the dining halls, is not an issue that would be brought to the Trustees but instead would be something to bring to the administration. These types of smaller issues are noticed by the Trustees, but only in terms of how they relate to larger concerns on campus.
