Asian-American Coalition (AAC)

Our goal is to enlighten both Wheaton campus and the local community of the culture and history of Asia as well as educate about the societal issues concerning Asia, Asians, and Asian Americans both on campus, locally, and globally. We hope to build a strong, active group that will engage in the collaboration and participation of events hosted by our organization to build a bridge amongst all Wheaton students, as well as the Wheaton faculty, fostering relationships and bringing the separate groups and individuals on campus closer together through cultivation of diversity on campus. In addition, AAC endeavors to build unity within the group as a way to develop a safe community where leadership can be nurtured and where personal issues regarding cultural identity can be addressed between members in a friendly, comfortable environment. We also strive to be as inclusive as possible by collaborating with other all other existing groups, particularly those that fall under the Intercultural Board (ICB) tier, as well as reaching out to form a closer relationship with Norton and the local community to educate about Asian culture and create a relationship between individuals and groups in the area all with similar goals. We hope to strengthen the Asian program at Wheaton also by connecting with other local college student Asian groups as well as groups in the Boston area and by improving the Asian Studies Program. AAC welcomes all students who identify as being Asian, Asian-American, or anyone interested in the many Asian cultures and experiences, and reinforces the necessity and advantages of diversity. We continue to hope to achieve multiple perspectives across many issues, whereby members of the organization can teach and learn from each other. Most of all, we hope that members of the AAC will have a lasting, enjoyable experience during their time at Wheaton.

Hillel

The mission of Hillel is to bring Jewish life, activities, and culture to the Wheaton Community: both for the Jewish population in the Wheaton Community, and for the non-Jewish population. The role of Hillel in facilitating multi-culturalism is accomplished through a variety of events. These range from religious holidays being observed and celebrated, to campus wide BBQ, dances, and speakers. All events and all weekly meetings are open to anyone, regardless of faith or practice. Hillel employs the SSSR office to help with specific events, such as hosting High Holiday Services, and bringing speakers to talk about current trends amongst Jewish College students. Hillel also helps out with many of the other inter-cultural clubs, and events, and many times helps to co-sponsor events. With the small Jewish community Wheaton and Norton has, it is the duty of the Hillel organization to provide for the needs of the Jewish community, and to promote awareness to other faiths and beliefs.

Interfaith Alliance (IFA)

We as the Interfaith Alliance endeavor to (1) promote an understanding of and appreciation for all religious, faith and spiritual groups; (2) provide a welcoming space for students who want to discover and explore their faiths; (3) and create a safe space for students to engage in respectful dialogues that move beyond tolerance and inspire collaborative initiatives, which will enhance diversity in the Wheaton community. We approach these goals in a number of different ways. During our weekly meetings, we discuss various faith-based experiences through programs such as “This I Believe,” as well as inviting off-campus speakers to educate the Wheaton community about their own practices. Special events, such as Holi, invite and encourage the Wheaton community to expand their awareness of religious and cultural celebrations that likely fall outside of their normal sphere of influence. We invite and welcome all students to our meetings and events in hopes to learn from each other through educational cultural and religious conversations!

Wheaton Organization for Women (WOW)

Wheaton’s Organization for Women’s purpose is to be a meeting place for women (and men if they so choose) to discuss issues that are of importance in the lives of women everywhere concerning primarily gender issues, health issues (including sexual, mental, physical), and social issues (with a focus on violence against women). Our vision is to bring more women’s issues (on campus, nationally, and internationally) into awareness for the campus, to provide a safe environment for women and men to meet and talk, and for there to be more participation on campus during national awareness months/weeks/days that concern women’s issues. We hope to be a place where everyone can bring their own ideas about issues of concern to all women and we can all discuss how to educate the campus about those issues and to organize events surrounding them. We also hope that this will be a place where we are able to discuss how these issues affect us in our personal lives.

Events:
This year, our events have included selling roses to raise money for The R.O.S.E Fund, participated in the Making Strides Breast Cancer Walk, put on fundraisers, co-sponsored events, had a vagina coloring contest and plan to once again take part in Take Back the Night.
