Greetings YMCA Residents,

This week Your Senators: Aaron, Shane and Zachary, have begun deliberating and formulating strategic action plans in order to begin working on the numerous Senate priorities we identified last week. Formal action plans will be made available in the near future on this website, with links provided on this blog.

In the meantime, I want to remind you that the Green Initiatives Committee (GIC) shall beginning its Second Greener Wheaton Competition on November 1st and it will end on November 30th. The dorm or house which reduces its energy consumption by the largest amount will win a party for all the residents of that quad or house. The Wheaton Wire, if you haven’t already gotten a copy, has an article on this exciting contest. YMCA consumed 10% more electricity in February 2009 than it did in February 2008; this is truly saddening and the Senators, Aaron, Shane and Zachary; urges everyone to take on responsibility and remember to not consume electricity when it is not required. Let’s strive to beat out the other quads on campus by cutting our consumption by 10% or more. If you want further information, contact Zachary Agush (agush_zachary@wheatonma.edu).

The GIC will hosting an Eco-Reps Informational Session tomorrow night at 8pm in the SGA Office. Rebecca Proctor, a member of the GIC, will discuss the duties and responsibilities of being an Eco-Rep. If you cannot attend this meeting but interested in becoming one, contact Rebecca Proctor (proctor_rebecca@wheatonma.edu). Applications will be accessible on the SGA Website and will be due on November 2nd.

Starting next week, there will be suggestion ‘boxes’ (envelopes rather) throughout not just our quad, but those of all dorms where residents can submit suggestions, complaints and requests to both their Senator and the SGA at large. We will give you a better update next week on these new communication outlets. Your Senators will also have a video online in the near future.

On a side note, the Programming Council’s Executive Board (in which Zachary is a member of) is beginning to collect student recommendations for the concert that occurs during Spring Weekend. If you have a suggestion, please post it on the provided link (to the event on Facebook). All recommendations must be posted by November 21st! Recommend now! The ICB invites everyone to attend its ‘Sterotyped’ event this Thursday at 6:30pm in the Chapel Basement. The purpose of this event is to breakdown and discuss the sterotypes we hear around us on a daily basis. If you want more information, contact a member of the Intercultural Board.

The Senate this evening approved two new clubs: the Anime Club and the Objectivism Club. Congratulations!

If you a student in a club that needs discresionary funding for its events during the remainder of this semester, the Venture Fund Committee shall be meeting three more times. See the Treasurer’s page on the SGA website for further details.

The Roosevelt Institute’s ‘Policy Not Politics’ event which will occur next Monday at 6:30-7:30 in the May Room. This is a panel discussion between professors and a medical doctor from California on the issue of healthcare in a nonpartisan and nonpolitical perspective. There will be a reception following the panel’s deliberations.

The final note we want to announce to you this week is that President Crutcher shall be attending Senate on November 3rd, 2009.

Thank you for your time and attention; we look forward to updating you next week with further developments from both within SGA and around campus.

Your Senators,
Aaron, Shane and Zachary

An Update from Your Senators (10/20/09)

Greetings YMCA Residents!

Over the past several weeks, Your Senators: Aaron, Shane and Zachary, have been hard at work determining what priorities Senate should be focusing on for this academic year. After a lively discussion last week, the Senate decided on five major priorities. These were: Transportation, Discounts at the Bookstore, Internet Usage, the Alcohol Policy, and Campus Safety. At this evening’s informal meeting, we broke out into our Ad Hoc Committees which will be working on the above priorities. Updates from each of these Ad Hoc Committees will be made available on the SGA Website in the near future on their own pages.

The annual priorities are not the only issues the SGA has been working on. The Green Initiatives Committee, a group of students from both the Executive Board and the Senate with additional membership from the community-at-large has been planning numerous projects to be put into action in the very near future. These are the following: the Second Greener Wheaton Competition, the establishment of an Eco-Reps Program, installing water filters in two dorms, and the completion of the year-long Poster Zones project.

The Second Greener Wheaton Competition will be occurring during the month of November. The dorm which reduces its energy usage by the largest margin will win a party for the whole quad. Your Senators urge you to participate. Please contact Senator Zachary Agush (agush_zachary@wheatonma.edu) for more information. Posters regarding the contest will be visible all over campus by the end of the week. Keep an eye out for them.

The Eco-Reps Program is currently being established. Students who are interested in promoting sustainability among their peers and enjoy interacting with others should attend the informational session planned for October 22nd. Eco-Reps will be looking to educate the campus on ways to conserve energy and resources, as well as promote environmentally friendly behavior. People who apply (applications will be released on the 22nd) and are accepted will only be obligated to administer their duties for several hours every week. If you would like to receive further information, please contact Rebeecca Proctor (proctor_rebecca@wheatonma.edu).

The Oversight Committee which was established by Aramark has been stating that they are planning on adding more vegetarian options at the Loft in the near future. Dining Services has also reported that by this point in the year, Wheaton students would have used approximately 100,000 paper cups but due to new policy, Wheaton students have only used 100 paper cups and have purchased 172 plastic reusable mugs.

Have a good night and best of luck to everyone who have midterms this week.

Your Senators,
Aaron, Shane and Zachary
